Limited Draw Licenses for Deer & Elk

Pierce Brothers Outfitters

We do our best to make sure your Colorado deer & elk hunt, is a once in a lifetime hunt. The 1st & 4th rifle seasons are elk only, the 2nd & 3rd are combination deer & elk. If you choose you can hunt only deer or only elk, the price is the same.

Deer & elk hunting in a limited draw area is the way hunting should be. If you have ever hunted in one of Colorado’s unlimited areas, you were surely plagued with too many hunters. Unit 66 is a specified unit with the numbers of hunters reduced by 50 % from the number of hunters we had in 1996.

In most limited draw areas it takes many years to draw a Elk license. This has not been the case in our unit, but it is getting harder each year. In the 2007 drawing it took a minimum of 2 preference points to draw an archery either sex elk license. In the rifle seasons it took a minimum of 2 points for the 1st rifle season & a minimum of 1 preference point in the 2nd, 3rd & 4th seasons.

The Muzzleloader hunters are a different story. It took a minimum of 9 preference points to draw for a muzzleloading license in unit 66 for Elk.

Deer hunting in the Gunnision Basin is different than in the rest of the state. In January 1999, the Colorado Wildlife Commision reduced the number of deer licenses by 90%. This makes it very hard to draw a deer license in unit 66. We have a very good buck to doe ratio in our area that we hunt and have always had a few trophy bucks. After the 90% reduction in hunters, were starting to see lots of trophy bucks and the herd numbers are coming back very quick. Now after our hard winter in 07 & into 08 we will have yet to see how the deer have wintered. Although it is hard to draw a license, if you do, it will be well worth it.

With this limited number of hunters, your chances of success for deer & elk are much more than in a unlimited area with the over crowding and over harvest of the deer & elk.

We have a (click here) list of our rifle elk hunting references & archery elk hunting references with some recent pictures from our hunts. We can also send a brochure or reference list by e-mail  request. Please leave your name & your complete address.
